Alghero

Alghero bastioni

Alghero is situated on the northwest coast of Sardinia Italy. It consists of a picturesque and well-preserved old town, where in the past, 400 years of spanish catalan domination have left their heritage and influence; street names appear in Catalan as well as Italian and today Catalan language is still spoken by the locals.

Streets in the old town are lined with marvellous churches and wrought-iron balconies, there are lots of restaurants, boutiques and cafes, as well as bastion walls that in the past made the town a fortress against the invaders.

Called the Riviera del Corallo (coral coast), Alghero is famous for its coral jewellery and carvings (divers risk their lives to extract the coral from the deep coastal waters). The coral in its raw form is branchlike and is worked into various shapes to make beads, rings, ear rings and carvings. It is so highly prized by natives and tourists.
